China's leading cement producer orders mega-size pyro line

ChinaThe Conch Group has decided to expand its Tongling plant with a record-size 12,000 tonnes per day clinker production line. This is the maximum kiln size available on the world market today. To supply the equipment for this pyroprocessing line, Conch chose FLSmidth who last year commissioned a similar size kiln at Holcim Ste. Genevieve in the United States.

The kiln system will be installed during the coming year. The system comprises:

  • 3-support kiln dia. 6.3 x 98 m
  • Duoflex burner for low heat-value coal
  • 2-string 5-stage preheater with dia. 9.0 m LP-cyclones
  • ILC Low NOx high-temperature precalciner dia. 9.8 x 39 m.

The kiln system is equipped with a Selective Non Catalytic Reaction (SNCR) system for NOx removal, making the kiln system state-of-the-art in terms of both low energy consumption and low emission values.

The Tongling plant is situated in the Anhui province in eastern China. Its two existing kilns, each with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes clinker per day, were also designed and supplied by FLSmidth back in 2002-03. They have been operating to the customer's full satisfaction.

The Conch Group is a major player in China's rapidly growing cement industry. Its production plants distributed across South and East China have a total capacity in excess of 100 million tonnes cement per year. By comparison, China's total cement consumption in 2009 is estimated to have been nearly 1,500 million tonnes.

Strengthening the Chinese presence
Not only is China a rapidly growing cement market whose industry produces around half the world's total output. To FLSmidth it is also an important source for manufacturing. In the longer term it is expected to become the Group's largest supplier of manufactured components and equipment, provided either by its own or by subsupplier workshops.

Although the Chinese market has in recent years been highly competitive, FLSmidth has been successful in selling selected types of machinery and equipment to Chinese customers. The company's long-term goal is to become a competitive supplier of cement plant equipment and services as well as selected types of minerals machinery and services in China. This will be achieved by strengthening its Chinese sales organisation and manufacturing facilities. The company will also introduce equipment specifically designed for the Chinese market.

To handle the increasing production of equipment for international projects and to support the strategic focus on the Chinese market, FLSmidth will double the size of its Qingdao manufacturing facility in 2010.
