Many new coal handling projects

Since the previous issue of Highlights, several power companies have asked FLSmidth to provide a complete package of coal handling equipment and systems.

With the acquisitions made over the last few years, FLSmidth now possesses a range of market-leading technologies and is a One Source for material handling systems used in a wide range of industries including coal-fired power plants.

Indian projects
Two of the coal handling projects are in India whose government has launched an ambitious plan to overcome the country’s power shortage. Among its initiatives are Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs) for which it has created financial special purpose vehicles (SPVs) to fund projects in the infrastructure sector. The power plant projects are auctioned off to the bidder who offers the lowest tariff. They must have an accelerated execution schedule and are to be based on supercritical technology.

First Mega Project
The first UMPP with a planned capacity of 4,000 megawatt (MW) is taking shape at Mundra Port, Gujarat. When commissioned by March 2011 it will be one of India’s most energy-efficient power plants. FLSmidth has been awarded a turnkey contract to provide the complete external coal handling system. The project includes design, supply, construction and commissioning of the system, starting at the ship unloading jetty, proceeding via a stockpile and ending at the power plant.

The stockpile will have a 6,800 tonnes per hour (tph) stacking capacity and a 4,500 tph reclaiming capacity. In addition to the world’s largest bucket wheel stacker-reclaimers for coal, the system also includes a series of high-speed and high-capacity conveyors. Electrical systems and automation, dust suppression and fire fighting systems are also part of the contract.

The Mundra Port project is being undertaken by Tata Power Company Ltd. for whom FLSmidth has previously undertaken material handling projects. Tata Power is a member of the Tata Group and is India’s largest private sector power utility.

Major contract in Uttar Pradesh
The National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC) has also recently awarded FLSmidth a contract to engineer, supply and construct a complete coal handling system. The system will be part of an expansion programme for NTPC’s power plant at Rihand, Uttar Pradesh in northern India.

The project includes a complete coal handl- ing system to convey coal from the ground hopper to the stockpile and then to the boiler bunkers inside the plant. Among the major equipment items are track hoppers, plough feeders, wagon tipplers, coal crushers, bucket wheel stacker-reclaimers and a series of belt conveyors. The system will be designed to handle 1,650 tonnes of coal per hour.

NTPC is India’s largest power producer. With a current generating capacity in excess of 30,000 MW, NTPC has embarked on plans to become a 75,000 MW company by 2017.

Vietnamese coal handling project
A Vietnamese power plant is also set to have an FLSmidth coal handling system installed. The contract was awarded by LILAMA Vietnam Machinery Installation Corporation, and the system is for a coal-fired plant owned by Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam). The plant is located in the Ha Tinh province, some 400 km south of the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi.

The scope of the contract ranges from engineering, design and supply of all key components to supervision of installation and commissioning. The coal handling equipment which FLSmidth is to provide includes ship unloading and storage facilities with a capacity of 400,000 tonnes. The total length of the conveyors being supplied is around 8 kilometres.
